Delivering the Future of High-Speed Rail in the US

The SYSTRA | TYPSA Joint Venture is delivering a comprehensive, efficient, and state-of-the-art track and overhead contact system (OCS) design for the initial 171-mile passenger service connecting Merced to Bakersfield.

This historic achievement marks the first high-speed rail track and OCS initiative in the United States.

Our team is fully integrated with the Authority in Sacramento, CA, to deliver this transformative rail infrastructure project.

OCS Design

SYSTRA | TYPSA Joint Venture is leading the OCS design and associated work that takes place in two primary phases — design principles and detailed design. The work includes:

Reviewing the designs and/or as-build documentation of Construction Packages 1, 2-3, and 4 to ensure integration with our OCS design.

Developing a design principles report and detailed design for the OCS system.

Supporting and providing input to the Authority regarding the selection of the OCS system.

Verifying that the OCS design considers expansion to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Sacramento.

Ensuring our design complies with European Standards/Technical Specifications for Interoperability (EN/TSI).

In 2008 voters passed Proposition 1A, directing the Authority to construct an electrified 494-mile-long rail system connecting the megaregions of Los Angeles and San Francisco to the growing cities of the Central Valley.

The Authority is responsible for planning, designing, building, and operating the first high-speed rail (HSR) system in the nation. The California High-Speed Rail (CHSR) system will connect the megaregions of the state, contribute to economic development and a cleaner environment, create jobs, and preserve agricultural and protected lands.

On June 26, 2024, the Authority’s Board of Directors selected the SYSTRA | TYPSA Joint Venture to design the HSR track and overhead contact system (OCS) for the initial 171-mile passenger service. The SYSTRA|TYPSA Joint Venture will perform the design principles and detailed design for the track and OCS system for the 171-mile Early Operating segment (EOS) from Merced to Bakersfield.
